30/30 Today was structured by biking 30 kms and beating my best speed ever by pedalling up to 30km/hr.
We biked out to Nudgee Beach and had chips shop food in the park looking at the mangroves growing in the ocean. It was not that tormenting so I think we could make it through Boodall Wetlands sometime. But def Nudgee is within range. We called like three halts each way, which makes it abotu 11/2 hours each way. Whoot.
on Sat I went to the Union Council which turned out well. They wound up letting me proxy which means I got to vote on stuff and I met some people. | | Wednesday, May 7th, 2008 | | 6:03 pm |
I got home today to discover two packages in the mail--one for Jeremy and one for me. The one for me was from Norah! Someone should thank her excessively for me. I'm wearing the plaid skirt right now. And the dress looks cool too.
Jeremy was all about his books with the love and stuff.
I'm cruising through WOrld War Z speaking of books.
I made the first nascent steps towards changing my career to a tafe teacher. You know they have basic literacy and numeracy programs for immigrants? That would be a cool career.
But I didn't do anything really just called about how one would theorhetically do it.
Had coffee and Lemon merangue pie and read world war Z this afternoon.
And one of my students called me the most "explanatory" teacher she'd had since year 8. It was in this little love fest my 11B's randomly threw for me where one said I explained everythin gthey needed to do unlike their other teachers and another said that there were two kinds of teachers, the "explanatory" ones like me and ones who yelled at you for getting things wrong. I was pretty stoked and this is btw my good thing for today. I felt very warm like I like to be liked but had given up on that, but being liked actually for being a good teacher? That's the prize.
So in general life is good and I'm really enjoying people's loving and helpful outpouring about my internal crisis, thank you all really. | | Monday, May 5th, 2008 | | 5:19 pm |
ok so here's the central question of my life--and I'm stumped.
How can I live in such a way to make the world better. I need it to be 1) Incorporated into my life or transforming my life to meet it. 2) Better than what I currently am, more radical more invasive. 3) To not require more of a sacrifice than I'm willing to give. 4) To make a positive practical difference to someone's life somewhere. 5) Sustainable over the long term.
I am interested in ALL responses and suggestions, even if they don't fulfill all these criteria.
I had a conversation with the Judean People's Front (not their real name Monty Python ref) today and was so heartbroken and disillusioned (as I alienated each and every member of the group while they mindlessly quoted hundred year old marxist philosophy) that I burst into tears in front of the last actually reasonably nice activist and cried all the way home while incoherently talking to Jeremy about what I want my life to look like. This was all good because it reminded me that I care. I want to live as a communist and to me that means anything which 1) makes people more equal or me treat people more equally. 2) helps those who are in most need or more need than me. 3) produces value or beauty to which everyone has equal access. 4) subverts a current system which I think harms people eg. war, credit cards, etc. 5) Limits the harm my consumption causes to others eg. not eating chocolate from slave plantations.
I've moved past the point where the people I was talking to today live, which is ideology. My ideology is basically, "everyone has the right to eat. don't kill babies." that's all I've got and I have no patience with anything that isn't heading in a practical way towards that. No I don't want your magazine, and I don't want to help you grow your organization. What are we for? If we're not doing anything, we're no good to anyone. But I have no better answers right now because I'm only a middle class liberal. So I think I need another revolution in myself and I'd love help on finding it.

Sulkybear takes control. It's cookie's wedding today. We're going there in about two hours. We had the zombie party on thurs which was a lot more fun than I'd imagined. The Zombies game was ok and we watched Shaun of the dead. I feel like I've been in a bad mood for weeks. I mean not when we're at pomona etc but whenever nothing specifically good has been going on the sulkiness has been taken over. Oh well. I hiked another mountain this week and I got together my pomona pics which are now online http://picasaweb.google.com/linksward | | Wednesday, April 30th, 2008 | | 9:04 am |
I'm going to thailand and cambodia in the spring. I've just worked out what I need to do to make the booking. SO it's going to happen sept oct. yay me. | | Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008 | | 7:10 pm |
Was reading about Oscar Wilde and started reading about this guy instead. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karl-Heinrich_Ulrichswho is much cooler. So I survived my 12 hour work day and had many positive parent teacher interviews. In other news J is making me dinner like a sweet pamperer. I geve my year 9's their test today and I have more than one student making a near perfect score. I rule! Also my protege from last year, Matt, came up to me at interviews and asked me to see him for tutoring again. I said Yes. Theater tix successfully changed so I'm seeing Hoods (hansel and gretel story told about homeless people) on Wed, (tomorrow) then leave Thursday for Pomona Mountain! | | Monday, April 21st, 2008 | | 6:17 pm |
In movies I wasn't sure I'd liked but turned out amazing news. War Dance. Get it if you can.
I have to work a 12 hour day tomorrow. Waah. | | Sunday, April 20th, 2008 | | 8:33 pm |
We got the level indicator on the rainwater tank and if you can believe it, it was more than half full! We changed the taps on our toilet and washing machine to use rainwater and ran a load of clothes. So our clothes were washed in rainwater and our toilet is hooked up to it too. It's so exciting and we were so happy to see that it didn't take much rain to fill the tank pretty full. I think we'll be able to use it basically all summer and some of the winter too. So exciting.
In other news I've been playing a lot of chess and frisbee and we reorganized the downstairs. I'm sleepy now even though it's before 9. Saw No Country for Old Men, which was really good, I recommend it. Ate lindor balls for dessert tonight.
We have lunches for all week from all my pasta cooking. I talked to Jes for a while this morning. It's been a lazy weekend, but we've done some running around. This week looks like comedy on Wed, maybe a movie tues, We have a theater thing Thurs and are planning an out of town trip for the three day weekend. | | Monday, April 14th, 2008 | | 10:00 pm |
More albums now exist on Picasa picasaweb.google.com/linksward I rocked out today at work and also renamed all photos. Went out to a movie with Jeremy tonight. Did bunches of good stuff. Am planned out for the week-am a model employee. Bed now. | | Sunday, April 13th, 2008 | | 8:04 pm |
Ok my tiger walk pictures are up on picasa. hug, Me | | 7:16 am |
So here I am. It's the last day of holidays. I went to the beach for three days and did a lot of walking around and a lot of little in room projects and reading.
Chess has taken my friend group by storm as though it were a new game. We bought a beautiful chess set a couple of days ago. Jeremy is reading all about history and strategy and I was convinced to play. Tony's coming over this afternoon to play with us. Had a random party where I knew no one last night. It was reasonably boring but I got to play a couple of games of pool and eat some fun veggie nibblies. Stress about my year 8 poetry unit is starting to enter into my heart. I've done a fair amount of work and have enough raw material but it doesn't enter into any structure and I need an actual lesson plan. When shall that happen?
Staying home for a break has worked out pretty well. I'm still happy with the break and have had a good time in it and did find time to do some stuff I otherwise wouldn't have. | | Saturday, April 5th, 2008 | | 3:44 pm |
It rained today, just a sprinkle. But enough for the first stream of water to trickle into my tank. Jeremy and I stood on stools and watched the pipe til it came. | | Monday, March 31st, 2008 | | 5:02 pm |
The plumbers are booked to come with the rainwater tank on Friday at lunchtime. It's really happening peeps. Now i just have to decide if I'm getting in a black toilet beforehand. | | Sunday, March 30th, 2008 | | 7:11 pm |
We went on the longest bike ride ever today. It was about 7km from Toombul, so about 10 overall. We rode to a wharf pretty near to the Boondall wetlands and Nudgee beach, which are two potential target destinations for next time. We took about 45 minutes on the way there, then had a little exhausted picnic at the wharf. There were two pelicans and some men trying to get a ship to work. The way back though we bested ourselves, 27 minutes to get back to Toombul with an average speed of 18 km. To put that in perspective, the usual average is 12-13km/hr. My top speed coming back was 26.9 km/hr, we tried to get the highest top once we got the average over 18. Anyway we made it in to toombul in time to do our weekly shopping still. | | Saturday, March 29th, 2008 | | 6:50 am |
I think it may start the rumour that the Lord ain't got no humor. I finished my 12 Maths A assignments and am now onto marking the double whammy of Midsem Exams. Which is 11 Maths B's which I'm secretly more excited about.
In life news I am totally getting the rainwater tank. I got the quote last week, we readjusted some stuff, it's in the realm I can afford, we're doing it next week. All the downpipes etc off the gutters replaced and patched into both my washing machine and my toilet, which I'm btw getting a brand new dual flush toilet installed while I'm at it. I've been pricing bathroom renovations and they seem doable too. They're not next though. Housing renovation projects are going to go (after this) 1. Rest of plumbing replaced, dishwasher installed 2. Polish hardwood floors 3. Back deck 4. Bathroom renovation 5. Buy actual couch set
But I'm a bit high that we're really getting something major done. The lighting fixtures sort of didn't count, bc they were old news and a smaller thing, but the rw tank is totally inthe catagory of we've been talking about and researching it since we moved in, and now we're making it happen. The great thing about this job is you'll got most of the money back in the government rebates. | | Tuesday, March 25th, 2008 | | 7:04 pm |
I'm at steve's sacking out and am awesome. I did too much work today but left work cheerful and now I'm watching lost and hanging out. Me and steve are doing nothing useful but having fun. | | Monday, March 24th, 2008 | | 8:32 pm |
We went first to Maroochydore where there were two swims and a long walk over the two days. We then went to Gympie where we walked down to the dam chasing the dog the whole way running in circles and then swam in the dam, climbing an ancient old diving board they'd made. The water was warm on top and cold and dark just underneath. I watched the neices catch fish in the dam the next day, between discovering the best part of Js fams property, and after chocolate egg making. Cried much of the day today for no damn reason, not listening to Anne well enough i suppose, then put on pretty clothes and walked a long way. Bought new pretty clothes at the beach. Online for the first time in 4 days. Nice talk with mom. Will call someone else someday. Sending a couple of easter packages tomorrow. whee. M | | 8:10 pm |
Hey all. I think I'm caving on my Nestle boycott. It's still hurting and I've been at it for over a year, over two? Ok sure killing babies but lets look at the big picture, just kidding. Ok the conditions of my caving are I have to do another boycott that's just as big. Currently I'm thinking of P&G/Colgate Palmolive over animal testing, trying to go cruelty free. Any suggestions? -M | | Thursday, March 20th, 2008 | | 7:42 pm |
Work has been infecting me more recently, I think about it more and I'm feeling the stressers and the sense of opressive caring like smothering, and the accompanying sense of inevitable failure and petty ridiculous ugliness in failure that characterizes most of my more cynical self senses in the working world. Don't know quite what to do about that, but Jeremy thinks it's just readiness for the end of term. Odd because in some ways its my best year ever by far at school. | | 7:40 pm |
"I've come to the realization that one must have a listener, even an imagined one, to understand what one is thinking." Do you agree with this?
Another one I've come across recently, "Lonely, on earth as it is in heaven." |
